Encourage your child to read often. Reading a few chapters of a novel before bed instead of watching TV or using their mobile phone/tablet will help them unwind and get a better sleep. Senior Phase Encourage your child to read critically. Downloading a free 'broadsheet' app (i.e. The Guardian) is useful - ask them to read an article and have them tell you about the writer's purpose/point of view/interesting language features. |

Encourage your child to participate in extended curricular opportunities at school and/or join clubs/teams outside of school. Senior Phase Encourage your child to develop performance levels by taking regular opportunities to practice out with class time, whether in school or at local sports centres. Encourage your child to watch sporting activities on television/internet and analyse what they see happening with individual and team performance. When doing this task, watching pre and post game shows which include analysts will benefit their knowledge and understanding. |
Modern studies
Please encourage your child to access the news regularly. This can be through TV, radio, newspapers or online. Please try engage them with discussion regarding relevant topics.
Many of these issues are covered daily or weekly in the news. By building up a greater awareness of related news stories, pupils will have a greater understanding and knowledge of the subject and have a wider range of examples to illustrate their extended responses.
Engaging them in discussion will also help them develop their critical thinking skills. Through discussion, you can support them in developing their ability to make and justify a point of view and consider the reliability and validity of different types of evidence.
